Works by Latin Composers Performed at Morris County Historical Society

MORRISTOWN, NJ - Spice up your Sunday afternoon serenaded by the music of 19th-century Latin composers Ricardo Castro and Teresa Carreno. Internationally acclaimed pianist Peter Toth (pictured) will play works by Castro, a Mexican composer and concert pianist, and Tammie Holloway, a trustee with the Boonton Historical Society and Museum and 40-year piano teacher, will play select pieces by Carreno, a Venezuelan pianist and conductor.

The performances on our 1872 Chickering piano (pictured) begin at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, at MCHS’s Acorn Hall Music Room.

A native of Hungary, Toth has lived in the United States since 2009 and is a piano faculty member at Rutgers University and piano teacher at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He has performed throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia, and the United States. He has been a regular guest artist at various music festivals in France and the United States.

During her 54-year international concert career, Carreno performed several times at the White House. As a 10-year-old prodigy, she played for President Lincoln, and a year before her death in 1917, she played for President Wilson. In addition to composing 75 works for piano, voice, choir and orchestra, Carreno was a virtuoso pianist and an accomplished opera singer.

Castro, who toured the U.S. in 1884, studied with Carreno in Europe in the early 1900s. He published in Paris many Mexican dances in the Habanera style and was director of the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico until his death in 1907 at age 43.

The event is free. RSVP by Tuesday, Oct. 1, as seating is limited. Light refreshments will be served.
MCHS is located at Acorn Hall, 68 Morris Avenue, Morristown, and is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibits and landscaped grounds, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students, and is free for children under 12 and MCHS members.
