This collection of work, spanning the last two years, touches on the anxieties of balancing my home life and studio practice. I challenged myself to create work that is outside of my comfort zone. I experimented with concept of abstract sculptural landscapes while still maintaining my point of view. It began with  Islands of Me , a series of hand-dyed soft sculptures resembling abstract landforms dotted with spiky blue flora which calmly scud across the sky like indigo clouds. The pairing of traditional “women’s work” with the competing forces in my life irrevocably fuse my memories into each sculpture.” Gallery Hours : Tuesday – Saturday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm | Fri...

Susu Pianchupattana: Inseparable September 15 – October 13, 2019 Opening Reception: September 15th, 4:00 – 6:00 pm, Live Music by Johnny Nameless IMAGE:  King & Queen • Oil on round burlap, 2019 Artist Statement: “Moved by human beauty and the mysteries of nature, Inseparable explores interpersonal connections and the bonding of one person to another; unbreakable through the natural truth of inevitable separation. I paint and draw from both direct observation and my own invention. My process involves the grinding and mixing of pigments then layering these colors with varying degrees of abstraction and realism. This method progresses by continually adding weight and subtracting elements of the human form until the image starts to reveal itself. I sculpt the subject through the appli- cation and removal of multiple layers of paint to achieve a contrast and subtlety of value in the spaces between. Through the creation of my work I am continually trying to learn to understand and a...

Monmouth County - Lincroft - Artist Gallery Talk and Book Signing: Stephen Barnwell: Captial Offenses

Image
Artist Gallery Talk and Book Signing Stephen Barnwell: Captial Offenses Wednesday, August 21, 2019 My technique for creating this body of work is digital collage. I assemble quite large collages in Photoshop from scans of original, public-domain engravings from my collection of hundreds of vintage books and periodicals from the late 19 th  century. My style of collage is one that does not look like a collage, but rather a seamless, unified image. This requires spending hours upon hours searching for each individual element in the work, which often comprises hundreds of elements, to find not just an appropriate image, but one that is compatible with the total collage. These elements are scanned at a very high resolution, cleaned, resized and manipulated, and then added to the final assemblage. They are printed on my own high-resolution color laser printer, one at a time, with unique serial numbers. I also like to add multimedia elements to the prints, such as stickers, stamps, seals...

Monmouth County - Lincroft - Monmouth Museum’s NJ Emerging Artists Series presents: Andrew Bencsko III, ex tempore

Monmouth Museum’s NJ Emerging Artists Series presents: Andrew Bencsko III ex tempore May 31 – June 30, 2019 Opening Reception:  Friday, May 31, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Artist Gallery Talk:  Wednesday, June 5, 2019, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm Both the reception and gallery talk are free and open to the public. Nilson Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sunday, 12:00 – 5:00 pm. Admission $8 Artist Statement: My abstractions stem from observations of heaps of discarded materials and debris during my hectic daily commute through NYC’s streets and subways. References of these seemingly thoughtless piles are made through snapshots and thumbnail sketches and in such a moment, they become compositions. I seek to depict the unconventional relationships of different forms and maze-like formations. On the surface, they are excess pieces of lumber, steel frames, and miss-cut studs from construction sites along with broken gypsum board, plastic wrap, conduit, and empty coffee ...

Monmouth County - Lincroft - Veronica Juyoun Byun: Tactile Memories

Image
Monmouth Museum’s NJ Emerging Artists Series presents: Veronica Juyoun Byun Tactile Memories April 26 – May 26, 2019 Opening Reception:  Friday, April 26, 2019, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Artist Gallery Talk:  Wednesday, May 22, 2019, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm Both the reception and gallery talk are free and open to the public. Nilson Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sunday, 12:00 – 5:00 pm. Admission $8 Artist Statement: I want my work to be a gateway, to touch the viewer more viscerally. What is felt then is both concrete and atmospheric. Furthermore, I believe in the notion that art is a language that can deliver a meaning of what is felt or sensed, but remains invisible. What is invisible is always there in a work; it is a message that is mysterious and profound. For myself, working in clay allows me the opportunity to offer “tactile pictures” and a range of impressions that I have gathered over time. These include memories and the questioning of my own Korean ide...

The Monmouth Museum is pleased to present,  Art & Healing: expressions of trauma and gratitude .
