Saturday, March 28 – Essex County Dressed to Kill: Fashion in the Victorian Era 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.     Learn about the hidden dangers of Victorian fashion and enjoy a Victorian-style reception in the gracious atmosphere of Kingsland Manor.   From arsenic in clothing to blazing crinolines, to lead in cosmetics, throughout history, we have worn deadly clothing and makeup to be at the height of fashion . . . even if it kills us. Textile and fashion historian Dana Bala will discuss some of the most lethal fashion practices in history, focusing on the Victorian and Edwardian periods, when people were literally “Dressed to Kill.”    After the presentation, attendees will enjoy a variety of Victorian tea refreshments at an informal reception.   Join us for a fun Victorian-themed afternoon at Kingsland Manor, March 28 th , 2020 from 1 – 4 pm. The Kingsland Manor Presents The Flemington Neshanock Base Ball Club vs. Kingsland Colonels of Nutley Base Ball Club (pictured) for the 5 th  Annual Base Ball Classic, May 18 th , 2019 at Yanticaw Park, Nutley       The Flemington Neshanock Base Ball Club plays by  19 th -century rules, uses authentic replicas of 19th Century equipment and wears 19th Century uniforms. As was the custom in the mid-19 th  Century, all fielders play barehanded - they do not wear gloves. Today’s Neshanock were re-established in 2001 by Brad “Brooklyn” Shaw, proudly reviving the original name of the team.  The Nutley Colonels was a semi-professional base ball club that was managed by a local All-State baseball star, Anthony J. Sunday, February 17 – Essex County Quilting and Textiles in the 18th and 19th Centuries Presentation at the Kingsland Manor Open House Tours 1-4 pm     Dana Bala has been quilting for approximately 15 years. She combines her love of history and fabric through researching historic quilts, patterns, techniques and the textile industry, particularly, in the 18th and 19 th  centuries.     A frequent volunteer at Washington Crossing Park, she has also given presentations at other historic sites such as the Abraham Staats House, the Miller-Corey Museum, East Jersey Olde Towne, and the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead. Her other areas of interest/expertise include embroidery, cooking and genealogy.    Admission is by donation to help with our ongoing restoration efforts at this Historic Site. Friday, December 14 – Essex County  7 - 10 pm A Candlelight Reading of Charles Dickens ' "A Christmas Carol" at the Kingsland Manor Join Mr. Dickens as he tells his timeless yuletide tale in the home of the Kingsland family, surrounded by holiday decorations, flickering candles and period furnishings. Light refreshments will be served. Children will leave with a small token from Santa and everyone will leave with memories for years to come. Don't forget your camera!  Recommended for children up to 10 years old. Admission by reservation. Saturday - Sunday,  December 1 - 2  - Nutley, Essex County Holiday House Tours at  the Kingsland Manor A 1700s brownstone Dutch colonial steeped in history and decorated as a Victorian Christmas for the holiday season. Come explore the historic Homestead of the Kingsland family and beyond, set within park like grounds overlooking a pond and waterfalls.   The Manor will be open for tours on Saturday and Sunday as a part of the Essex County Historic Holiday House Tour from 12:00 - 4:00 pm each day.  Free Admission; donations gratefully appreciated.
