Thursday, February 13 – Union County The Genealogical Society of the West Fields Meeting Thursday, February 13, 2020      The Genealogical Society of the West Fields invites you to join Jacquelyn Oshman of the New Brunswick Free Public Library on Thursday, February 13, 2020.  The meeting will be held at 1:00 pm in the Westfield Memorial Library, 550 East Broad Street, Westfield, NJ.      Jacquelyn Oshman has been a reference librarian at the New Brunswick Free Public Library for 15 years. She specializes in local history and genealogy and has given genealogy presentations to numerous organizations around New Jersey. Her presentation will focus on  the collections held at the New Brunswick Free Public Library that are most widely used by researchers and how they can help genealogists in the area.

Mayers will present " The War in the Westfield Area - Retreating Redcoats Ravage the Countryside ” based on his new book,  Revolutionary New Jersey: Forgotten Towns and Crossroads of the American Revolution . Mayers thrives on discovering facts about the American Revolution not found in works of earlier writers. The descendant of Patriot soldier, Corporal John Allison, the American Revolution is personal to him. Visits to Revolutionary War sites, combined with research into original documents and oral accounts, help Mayers bring history alive. Wednesday, March 27 – Union County     In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is proud to sponsor  “Virginia Apgar, Newborn Babies and the March of Dimes” at the Westfield Memorial Library on  Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at 7:00 pm. David Rose, the National Archivist of the March of Dimes, will be the presenter at this free event.     Born in Westfield, NJ, Virginia Apgar was an anesthesiologist. She was best known for creating the Apgar Score, a clinical system for evaluating the physical condition of newborns at birth by measuring their pulse, skin color, reflex, muscle tone and respiration to determine medical needs.      Dr. Apgar assisted in the delivery of over 17,000 infants and was the first woman to hold a full professorship at Columbia University. At the March of Dimes, she directed programs of research in the causes, prevention, and treatment of birth defects.  ...
