Sunday, November 24 – Union County 2:00 to 4:00     “Thanksgiving Dinner Demonstration & 18th-Century Table Customs” Miller-Cory House Museum, 614 Mountain Avenue, Westfield       A special day of thanks has been part of the American tradition since 1621. The Miller-Cory House Museum cooks will demonstrate the preparation of an early American Thanksgiving feast over the museum’s open-hearth fire, using colonial recipes and seasonal ingredients.  (Please note that this is a demonstration only; dinner is not being served.) Proper colonial dining also requires proper table customs.  The program includes a presentation on authentic early American manners, place settings, and other interesting “table-top traditions.”  Docents will be available to guide visitors through the restored, fully furnished colonial-era farmhouse. Admission is $5 ages 13 and older; $3 ages 3-12, and free age 2 and younger. 908-23...

Sunday, November 3  -  Readington Township, Hunterdon County "Buckwheat - from the fields to the Table" at the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead Buckwheat, an ancient grain, was introduced into Colonial America by the earliest colonists including the Dutch. Susan McLellan Plaisted MS RD CSP LDN will demonstrate how these early farmers, such as the original owners of the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead, would have grown and milled buckwheat. This hands-on program involves grinding and sieving buckwheat flour as well as preparing buckwheat cakes for the open hearth. This program will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. This Open House Sunday program will be held at the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead, located at 114 Dreahook Road in the Stanton section Readington Township. For GPS use Lebanon, NJ 08833. Saturday, November 2 – Somerset County SEASONAL FOODWAYS Saturday, November, 2nd 1:30 pm The Dutch Barn at Rockingham In the 18th century, not all foods were available all year long. There were no supermarkets as we know today to sell out-of-season fruits and vegetables. You could not buy a peach in February or tomato in May (or any other month, actually) . You planned your menus according to what was available in your garden or from local markets during growing seasons and what was preserved, dried, pickled, smoked or salted in storage the rest of the year.  Deborah Peterson, foodways historian, will bring to light just how dependent colonial Americans were on the seasons of the year for their food on  Saturday, November 2nd at 1:30 . Sunday, May 19 – Union County Cooking with Herbs Miller-Cory House Museum, 614 Mountain Avenue, Westfield; 2:00 to 4:00     Aromatic, tasty, and healing – herbs were of the utmost importance to the colonial household. They were prized as medicines, dyes, pesticides, air fresheners, and for numerous other purposes. The Miller-Cory House Museum’s program will focus on their culinary uses. Members of the Cooking Committee will include herbs common to the 18 th  century in demonstrating open hearth cooking for visitors. Authentic open-hearth cooking is a unique feature of the museum’s programming.  Volunteers prepare early American recipes using utensils, techniques, and seasonal ingredients of the time in the Frazee Building, a separate structure on the grounds, which, like the museum, dates to the 18 th  century. Discover how food, receipts, cooking techniques, and the kitchen itself has changed since the 1890s. This free event runs from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. In an annual tradition spanning over 35 years, visitors have gathered around Durand-Hedden’s 18th century hearth and experienced how Maplewood residents of long ago cooked, ate, and kept warm during the long winter months. This tradition takes place on Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Durand-Hedden is pleased once again to welcome cook Margaret Quinn to its kitchen. Margaret is the spirited shearer who trimmed the wool from visiting sheep at our From Fleece to Cloth event in April two years ago and will bring the same energy and skill to our fireplace. Margaret has worked in the living history field for over twenty years and has become proficient at wood stove and open earth cooking. She continually expands her culinary knowledge as a participant in the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums and the Historic Foodways Society of the Delaware Valley. Sunday, December 2 – Union County 1:30 to 4:00 “Gingerbread Sunday” Miller-Cory House Museum , 61 4 Mountain Avenue, Westfield      Spicy sweet gingerbread is a special part of the holiday season. Its many forms – houses and figures, cookies and cake – hold a special appeal for children and adults alike. The museum’s program is dedicated to this festive treat. Children will make a decorative, non-edible gingerbread house and one additional craft to take home and will hear "gingery" stories.  Light refreshments will be served. In the Frazee Building, members of the Cooking Committee will prepare early American recipes using ginger over the open hearth. Admission is $5.00 per child; accompanying adults are free.   Advance reservations must be made. Requests will be accepted via phone  (908-232-1776 ) or email ( millercorymuseum@gmail.com ) through November 30 and by phone only from November 30 to noon, December 1. ...
