Battery Lewis was one of two batteries constructed during World War II at the Navesink Military Reservation as part of the Harbor Defenses of New York. Built on the prototype developed by the U.S. Army for a new generation of casemated batteries, Battery Lewis is an immense 600-foot long structure that consisted of two 16-inch caliber gun emplacements connected by a corridor housing ammunition storage and a power plant. Battery Lewis was the largest coastal fortification built in New Jersey during the War, and the most important of the Primary Armament defending New York City. Wondrous Winter Walks @ Hartshorne Woods Hartshorne Woods  Rocky Point Parking Lot 1402 Portland Road, Highlands, NJ (Rocky Point Entrance) 07732 Thursday, February 26, 2020, from 10:00-11:30 AM  (all ages, under 18 with adult) Nature walks are like snowflakes, each one is unique in its own way. Tag along with a Park Naturalist as you explore the serenity that is nature in the wintertime. Please wear appropriate Winter clothes and sturdy footwear.

Hours 10 am to 4:00 pm, Thursday through Sunday through Labor Day Labor Day to October 20, 2019: Fridays, 12:00-4:00 PM; Saturdays, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM; and Sundays, 12:00-4:00 PM through October 20

Casual Birder Thursday, May 9 at 9:00 AM Hartshorne Woods Park Rocky Point Parking Area 300 Navesink Ave, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716 Adults are invited to join a Park System Naturalist for these laid-back morning bird walks. We’ll meander through the parks for about 1.5 hours to see what birds we can nd. No need to be an expert at identifying birds to enjoy these walks. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.
