McDaniel’s triumphant picture book Hands Up! recasts a charged phrase as part of a black girl's everyday life--hands up for a hug, hands up in class, hands up for a high five--before culminating in a moment of resistance and strength at a protest march. Join us in remembering the 56th anniversary of the week when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote his letter from Birmingham Jail while incarcerated for protesting against segregation.
