A JUNETEENTH Event 19 June, 2019 6:30pm - 8:30pm As part of the Monmouth County Freedom Story Oral screening of a short documentary: "Racing for Freedom," will be shown that puts a spotlight on the horse racing industry and how black jockeys, pre Civil War, bought their freedom and the economic impact, particularly in Monmouth County, the industry had on the Black community. Followed by a discussion with former jockey, Ronald Tanner, former handler, Rodney Noel and Clocker: Gatha Artis.

Gloucester County - Woodbury - Juneteenth Story Time

Wednesday, June 12 - Gloucester County Juneteenth Story Time 3:30PM at Woodbury Public Library 33 Delaware Street, Woodbury. Kids 3-12 are welcome to this Juneteenth-themed story time with Mrs. B. This afternoon event will feature stories, crafts, and snacks. Free and open to the public.  

Essex County - Maplewood - Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom

Juneteenth, an African American holiday marking the end of slavery, will be celebrated Sunday at Durand-Hedden House, in collaboration with the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race. The event, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm, will include reenactors from the Civil War 6th Regiment Colored Troops, African Drummers and Dancers, the Columbia High School Special Dance Company, a demonstration by Nubian Quilters, storytellers, and many activities for adults and children, including face-painting, read-alouds, and making paper quilt squares. The winners of the student essay contest will read their essays. Vendors of African-themed books, clothing, and jewelry will add to the excitement. Delicious individual pies and cookies will be available for sale. Also available will be voter registration forms, free blood pressure screenings, and health information about sickle cell disease and bone marrow donation.
