Wednesday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 29 -- Middlesex County
The American Jewish Experience Lecture Series, presented by the Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey, continues for its 22nd consecutive year with a presentation by Dr. Marcia Midler, entitled "Gertrude Berg: Broadcasting Pioneer/Creator of Molly Goldberg; the Original Jewish Mother."
Gertrude Berg, “Molly” of "The Goldbergs" (per the NY Times obituary) was the creative force behind a "Goldbergs" media empire spanning over 30 years. As Molly, she was the Oprah of her day, welcomed into the homes of millions. "The First Lady of Radio," she was the second-most admired woman in the country. (The first was Eleanor Roosevelt, the actual First Lady.) She raised millions of dollars selling war bonds, and writing scripts supporting the war effort. Join us on to learn why the most famous female writer/performer and beloved media character of their time remains largely unknown today.
Dr. Marcia Midler holds a B.A. and an M.A. from Cornell, and a Ph. D from Rutgers, all in English. Before leaving Academia for a corporate career at AT&T and Telcordia, she taught at University College, Rutgers. In retirement, she belongs to a number of book clubs, and enjoys lecturing and facilitating book discussions. She has given presentations for the Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey, The Jewish Heritage Museum of Freehold, 55 Plus, The Brandeis University National Women's Committee (Middlesex County Chapter), Stonebridge, East Brunswick, Allentown and Highland Park Hadassahs, Edison JCC, and the Pond's Culture Club.
The lecture will be held on
Wednesday, October 23rd, at 10:30 a.m. at the Highland Park Conservative Temple, 201 South 3rd Avenue, Highland Park, and will be
repeated on Tuesday, October 29th at 10:00 a.m. at Jewish Family Services, 52 Concordia Shopping Center, Monroe Township. Both lectures are open to the public. A donation of $2.00 is requested at the door. For more information email the JHSCJ office at
