Heather Garside is the Director/Curator of the Passaic County Historical Society. She will present an illustrated lecture about Paterson, the Silk City. The 1913 Silk Strike marks the end of Gilded Age prominence for silk manufacturers in Paterson. This program will provide a brief history of Paterson's silk industry and discuss the importance of the 1913 Silk Strike in changing the economic and cultural landscape of Paterson for the 20th century. The increasing number of women and children in the labor supply provided cheaper labor for mill owners and reduced demand and wages for more expensive male laborers, lowering their wages. The weavers wanted shorter workdays better conditions and a minimum wage.
