Sussex County - Newton - How to Research the History of a House

For its second fall lecture, the Sussex County Historical Society will sponsor a lecture at 2:00 pm It will focus on How to Research the History of a House. The third lecture will be held on November 2.

This comprehensive pair of lectures will cover numerous areas of needed background information and data gathering techniques that will help a homeowner or researcher investigate the history of a house or building.
The lectures will cover the following subjects: the history of architectural styles, oral history, documentary sources, deed searching, wills, H.A.B.S., directories, tax ratables, maps, books and newspapers, helpful architectural references, historic inventories, inferred data, deceptive clues, and physical evidence including nails, latches and hinges, screws, door molding, etc. A listing of useful references will also be reviewed and distributed.

Wayne T. McCabe, President of the Sussex County Historical Society will deliver the lectures. These two lectures will be held on the second floor of the Hill Memorial Building and run between 2 to 3 hours each. There is an admission charge for the pair of lectures of $50 for nonmembers of the society and for $40 for members. This charge covers the cost of all reference materials that will be distributed.
