A Taste of History
Learn about the foods and food habits of colonial America
from the renowned chef of Philadelphia’s City Tavern
The Trent House Association is honored to host Chef Walter Staib for a talk and book signing as part of the celebration of the historic house’s 300th anniversary. A third-generation restaurateur with more than four decades of culinary experience, Chef Walter Staib is an author, Emmy Award-winning TV host, James Beard-nominated chef and culinary historian. He is currently the driving force behind Philadelphia’s City Tavern, a faithful recreation of an original 18th-century tavern, host of A Taste of History© on PBS and author of four cookbooks for sale and signing before and after the lecture. The program will begin at 4 pm on October 12, 2019, in the Chapel of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 801 West State Street, Trenton, NJ 08618.
Chef Staib will speak on the diet and dining habits of European colonists in early America and his own experiences researching recipes and presenting food from that era to modern-day diners. Before and after his talk, Chef Staib will be available to sign his cookbooks – A Sweet Taste of History, The City Tavern Cookbook, Black Forest Cuisine, and his newest, a companion to his PBS series, A Taste of History – all available for purchase at the event.
Cocktails and a colonial-themed dinner catered by Chez Alice will continue the evening of celebration, starting at 6 pm in Synod Hall of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. With Catered by Chez Alice with a choice of entrees, hard cider from Melick Cider will be available along with colonial grog, wine, and beer.
Tickets for Chef Staib’s talk are $40 and includes tastings of sweets from City Tavern. Cocktail and dinner tickets can be purchased separately at $125 or in combination with the talk for $150.
