Middlesex County - New Brunswick - "Domestic Outbuildings of Northwest Central New Jersey"

Tuesday, February 5 – Middlesex County
The New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance (www.njsaa.org) welcomes Carla Cielo who will speak on "Domestic Outbuildings of Northwest Central New Jersey." The talk will begin at 4:15 pm in the Pane Room, first floor of Alexander Library (around the corner past the circulation desk), Rutgers University, 169 College Avenue, New Brunswick. Free and open to the public.

Domestic outbuildings were historically built for tasks deemed inappropriate for a dwelling and include the root cellar, smokehouse, outkitchen, springhouse, milkhouse, washhouse, icehouse, pump-house, dryhouse and bakehouse. They were often purposefully designed to combine two or more functions in separate dedicated spaces. Carla Cielo has documented over 60 domestic outbuildings since 2006. In her talk, she will identify and illustrate over 20 different combination plan types built in northwest central New Jersey. She will also discuss the evolution of various technologies of use and construction that occurred between the late 18th century and the early 20th century and illustrate how each plan type was used.

Carla Cielo is a historic preservation consultant working throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania (historicbuildingpreservation.net). She is noted in the field of architectural investigation and documentation, was trained by Historic American Building Survey (HABS) and has conducted several township wide documentation studies including the documentation of over 250 structures in Holland and Delaware Townships.

The talk will begin at 4:15 pm in the Pane Room. Business meeting will be at 3 pm. Both are open to the public. Free parking is available in lots 26, 30 & College Avenue Deck without permits, but please register beforehand

In the event of cancellation due to bad weather, the lecture will be rescheduled for Tuesday, February 12th, same time and place.
