Hudson County Community College invites residents to view the fall exhibition, "WWI: Beyond Flanders Fields." The exhibition honoring New Jersey WWI heroes has been curated by Michelle Vitale, HCCC Director of Cultural Affairs and will be on view from Monday, September 10 through Friday, November 16 at the College’s Dineen Hull Gallery located at 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City–just a block away from the Journal Square PATH Transportation Center. It is open to the general public and there is no charge for admission.

The exhibit highlights war themes as well as examines its global and cultural effects on Hudson life. Unique military items on display include distinguished medals, shrapnel similar to that launched during Jersey City’s 1916 Black Tom explosion, a U.S. service coat with an insignia from the New York 77th Division (on loan from the National WWI Museum and Memorial), and photos of soldiers in training at Dickinson High School. The exhibition also includes a video slideshow, a music section with a listening station, and an arts section highlighting some of the iconic WWI War posters.

Supplementary programs include public lectures in partnership with the New York Military Affairs Symposium. Special installations include a commemorative poppy memorial to Hudson County veterans, select WWI movie screenings and live-streaming events.

The Opening Reception will take place on September 11 from 4-7 pm. Andrea Siotto will give a guest lecture on “The Experience of Trench Warfare on the Western Front.” The lecture begins at 4:30 pm. Siotto is an Italian doctorate candidate in the History Department at Temple University. He is interested in the development of technology and tactics used before and during the First World War. He holds a master’s degree in history from the Università degli Studi Roma Tre in Rome, Italy.

Week Day Screenings of WWI classic movies will begin on September 10 at 11 am and continue through November 16 in the Dineen Hull Gallery. Movie titles include "Farewell to Arms," "Paths of Glory," "Westfront," and "Wooden Crosses."

Kevin C. Fitzpatrick will give a special lecture on September 25 as part of the "WWI: Beyond Flanders Fields" exhibition. Fitzpatrick is the author of seven books tied to New York City history. His most recent is "World War One New York: A Guide to the City’s Enduring Ties to the Great War." He is the program director for the WWI Centennial Committee for New York City.

The Dineen Hull Gallery will once again be participating in the annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour and the exhibition will be open for viewing on Friday, October 5 from 11 am-5 pm and Saturday, October 6 from 11 am-5 pm. The Gallery is not open on Sunday.

In partnership with the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, HCCC faculty and distinguished community members will read poetry and prose highlighting WWI for National Book Month. The reading will take place on October 9 from 7-9 pm at the at the Apple Tree House, 298 Academy Street. The event is free, reservations are strongly encouraged.

The exhibition closing will be held on November 15 from 4-7 pm. Captain Devon Collins a professor at West Point, will present a lecture on "POW veterans in WWI.” The lecture begins at 4:30 pm.
