Historical Society Opens New Exhibit
The Salem County Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit entitled, “The First Inhabitants: The Lenape and Their Predecessors.” The Salem County Historical Society collection includes thousands of Native American artifacts from the past 10,000 years. The exhibit will provide a sample of the Society’s collection to show the diversity of tools and techniques applied to survive and thrive in our region for thousands of years.
Families and individuals have been donating locally found artifacts since the founding of the Society in 1884. These donations of large personal collections and individual artifacts have grown into a significant historical record of the early inhabitants of Salem County. This exhibit will provide a sample of the Society’s Native American artifacts collection and intends to show the diversity of tools and techniques applied to survive and thrive in our region for thousands of years. Among the highlighted items the exhibit will include:
· Hammerstones, Axes, Drills and Adzes developed for tool making, woodworking and building.
· Mortars and Pestles for agricultural food preparation.
· Blades and Scrapers for animal food preparations and manufacturing clothing.
· Canoe Anchors, Fish Hooks, and Net Weights developed for fishing.
· Knives and Pottery shards used for food preparation and storage.
· Pendants and Gorgets for personal and ceremonial decorating.
The exhibit will open to the public on Friday, November 23rd. Please stop by to see it!
