Passaic County - Hawthorne - The Civil Rights Movement

Wednesday, November 13 – Passaic County

    On Wednesday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the Louis Bay II Library, 345 Lafayette Ave, Hawthorne NJ, the Passaic County Historical Society is hosting Mario Medici as he presents the Civil Rights Movement. The civil rights movement was a struggle by African Americans in the mid-1950s to late 1960s to achieve civil rights equal to those of whites. No social or political movement of the twentieth century has had as profound an effect on the legal and political institutions of the United States. Learn how this movement sought to restore to African Americans the rights of citizenship guaranteed by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, which had been eroded by segregationist Jim Crow Laws in the South.

   Mario Medici is a retired Information Technology executive with 50 years of business experience, 30 of which were with the airline industry. Having traveled the world extensively, and with a love for amateur photography, Mario focuses his lectures on the sights and attractions of New York and New Jersey with a concentration on their historical, architectural, and artistic aspects. Mario currently lectures at Bergen Community College's Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR); clients include schools, community organizations, libraries, and corporations. Mario is also a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide and holds an MBA - Finance from Long Island University.

Sunday, June 9 – Somerset County Save the Date for a visit with an  18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist      Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time.  There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own.
