Public Presentation: The Living Shoreline at NWS Earle - a Tale of Oyster Survival and Growth
by Meredith Comi, NY/NJ Baykeeper
Wednesday, November 13th at 7:30pm at Bahrs Landing Restaurant, Highlands
Meredith Comi, NY/NJ Baykeeper's Restoration Program Director, will provide an update on the Baykeeper's Living Shoreline Project at the Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Earle naval base. Since 2016, oysters have been raised in aquaculture tanks there and then relocated to the project site in NWS Earle waters.
Meredith will describe why and how they got to NWS Earle and what she and her team are doing to bring back oysters to the Jersey Shore. To date, 6000 oyster castles (concrete structures placed offshore onto which oysters are located) and installed in Earle waters, and the project continues
Since NWS Earle is a Homeland Security Zone and heavily guarded, it offers a unique opportunity to study and explore the effects of a living shoreline incorporating oysters in an urban estuary.
7:30pm: Coffee & Cookies. 8:00pm: Presentation and Q&A. 9:00pm Close.
Before the presentation, enjoy dinner in the restaurant or snacks at the bar!
