Historic Montague Houses Reopening for Summer Tours

The Montague Association for the Restoration of Community History (M.A.R.C.H.) of Montague, NJ, is pleased to announce that our two historic houses, the Foster Armstrong House and Nelden-Roberts Stonehouse, will both be reopened for the summer for tours beginning on Sunday, June 30th from 1 to 4 p.m.  They will be open Sundays from 1 to 4 pm until August 25, 2019

The first of our featured seminars this summer includes a special presentation during the reopening called “The Dutch, the Indians, and the Quest for Copper – Pahaquarry and the Old Mine Road” by Frank Salvati. For over 100 years it has been asserted that Dutch miners operated a copper mine in the upper Delaware Valley about 1650, then built a 104-mile-long road to what is now Kingston, NY to transport the ore to the Hudson River. Or did they? Hear the true story of the old copper mine, the road, and the local Munsee Indians who lived there on Sunday, June 30th at 2:00 pm at the Foster Armstrong House.

There is no admission fee for the museums, but donations and new memberships are always welcomed.

The Foster-Armstrong House, circa 1790, is a two-story Dutch colonial located on SC521/320 River Road, about 1 mile north of the Milford/Montague Bridge. It is listed on the State Historic Register of NJ and is a National Historic Register Site. Ten rooms at the Foster Armstrong House are decorated with local history displays. Featured at the Foster Armstrong House this summer are displays of native Lenape Indian artifacts from the Tri-State area, a quilt room featuring 25 antique quilts, a military room with artifacts from Montague veterans from the Civil War to the Iraq War. There is a Victorian period bedroom, spinning and weaving loom, a Colonial keeping room and multiple pictorial displays of local houses and buildings that are no longer standing plus much more!  When finished with your tour make a stop our Foster General Store with rare books and handmade artisan gifts available for purchase.

The Nelden-Roberts Stonehouse is a historic Montague house also located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and maintained by M.A.R.C.H. Circa early 1820’s, this building served as one of the four original schoolhouses in Montague. Many other history displays will be available there for viewing during tours.

M.A.R.C.H., a nonprofit historical society established in 1979, has a partnership with the National Park Service to keep both houses open to the public as museums. Both sites are available for small group tours and the research library is open by appointment only for genealogy and historical research. Call 973-293-3949 to schedule.
