The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey will present Raymond W. Holman, Jr.’s exhibit, Portraits of Caregivers from June 8th to August 31st. The exhibit will be on display at the museum located in the Noyes Arts Garage, 2200 Fairmount Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ.
Caregivers face the emotional, physical, psychological and financial challenges of making decisions about health care, nursing homes, and legal matters for aging loved ones while managing their own lives. Ralph Hunter says “the topic of Caregiving is an important subject for the museum to address because it is something that most of us will have to deal with sooner or later.” Hunter plans to supplement the museum exhibit with useful information on the subject.
Raymond Holman is a skilled observer whose photographs invite us to see the strength and commitment that love sometimes requires. His photographs confront the viewer with the universal reality of caring for aging or ill family members suffering with Alzheimer's, dementia, and physical ailments as they approach the end of life. The artist strives to capture images that tell the story of a particular moment in time. His work has been shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and published widely.
The Portraits of Caregivers exhibit has been curated from his long term project titled “Portraits of Family Caregivers of People with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.” Mr. Holman has included four South Jersey residents in this exhibit. Judah Dorrington, Robert “Bobby” Greene, Charmaine Gunther-Gary and Kyle Ruffin have all experienced the role of caregiver.
