Sewing Bird Collection

The Monmouth Museum is home to one of North America’s largest collections of 18th and 19th century sewing clamps also known as sewing birds. Sewing clamps were used in the 18th century to attach one end of a piece of cloth firmly to a table to enable a seamstress to hold her sewing taut with one hand while stitching with the other. Before the invention of the sewing machine, clothing, sheets and other household items were sewn by hand.

Betty Jean and Carl Meyer Art & Nature Area

The Navesink Garden Club has been a partner with the Monmouth Museum when in 2015 a member of the club, who is also a Friend of the Monmouth Museum, a volunteer committee that helps to raise funds for the museum and helps to host the Museum’s Main Gallery opening receptions, donated money to the Museum to establish a place where visitors could utilize the outside of the museum to enjoy trees, plants, flowers and nature.  The club planted native plants and established a butterfly garden.  This is named the Betty Jean and Carl Meyer Art & Nature Area (Meyer Art & Nature Area).   Since then the members of the Navesink Garden Club (NGC) have helped plant and maintain this area.

Becker Children’s Wing

The Becker Children’s Wing is designed as a comfortable, hands-on learning environment for elementary school children over 6 years and their families. Here, learning is an active process and exhibitions are designed to offer children an interactive engagement with a subject. Visitors can explore the exhibition, experiment with many hands-on activities and visit the children’s gift shop.

Ancients To Astronauts: How We Communicate is now open in the Becker Children’s Wing (see the Hours page for times for Becker Children’s Wing hours during the week and on weekends). Explore the theme of communication through four exhibitions featuring hands-on, interactive displays and activities on different subjects.

• Experience weather and learn how weather reports are broadcast
• Travel to Ancient Egypt in a time machine
• Blast off in a Friendship 7 capsule in our Space Exhibition
• Discover new crafting experiences in our popular Green Arts Studio

WonderWing

The six-and-under audience will have a magical undersea learning experience playing in our popular WonderWing.

Children can explore a pirate ship, perform in a Tiki theater, climb a tree house, experience a kelp forest, slide down a whale slide, and listen to a moving waterfall.

Birthday parties are often booked in advance so be sure to call first to make sure the WonderWing is open.
