John Mason watercolor Birth Record dated 1767. Gift of Mrs. J. Amory Haskell,1931. This remarkable early example of New Jersey folk art was donated to MCHA four days after its new museum in Freehold opened to the public.
Association Receives Conservation Grant

On Wednesday, 25 July, the Association learned that it has been awarded a grant of $14,070 from the New Jersey Historical Commission for the conservation of six exceptional Folk Art works on paper from the permanent collection. The items, all in extremely fragile and damaged condition, include a Birth Record for John Mason dated 1767; a watercolor portrait dated 1817 that depicts Captain James Lawrence of "Don't Give Up the Ship" fame; a watercolor by Miss Phebe Mills of Barnegat dated 1812 that shows three girls dancing in bright, Empire waist dresses; a watercolor landscape view, ca. 1830, of Haddon Hall by John Evans Redman; a watercolor Birth Record of the Brown Family of Old Bridge ca. 1810; and an 1849 watercolor landscape view of Long Branch by Joshua Parker.
Five of the six works were given to the Association between 1931 and 1942 by Mrs. J. Amory Haskell, a leading collector of Americana in her day and a key patron of MCHA in its formative years. The Brown Family Birth Record was donated in 1958 by J. Mabel Brown, a long-serving trustee and former President of the Association.
All six works have been examined in detail by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia. They are the leading paper conservation firm available to small museums in the Mid-Atlantic area. The Center's treatment recommendations vary, depending on the conditions of each individual work. All will be returned to the Association in permanent, sealed housing to protect them in the future from particulate matter and environmental extremes.
The project grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State, will cover two-thirds of the total cost of conservation. The Association would welcome donations to help raise the remainder of funds needed. Please contact Joseph W. Hammond, Director of Collections, for further information.
Don't forget--MCHA membership includes free Museum admission!  If you haven't seen the Tracking Sandy exhibition yet, you should stop in!

Traveling Trunk Show

Getting ready for the fall? Consider bringing a trunk show to your classroom, scout meeting, book club, women's group, or senior residence. MCHA offers several trunk programs that we can bring to you! The trunk programs cover various local history topics such as the Battle of Monmouth, the Lenni Lenape who lived in this area, an 18th century fashion show, and the process of taking fiber and turning it into usable fabric.
