The Metlar-Bodine House Museum presents:
PALIMPSEST: The Cultural Landscape of Camp Kilmer on Livingston Campus with Kimberly A. Tryba, MLA Graduate 2018, Dept. of Landscape Architecture, Rutgers University
Sunday, August 19 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Situated on a quiet corner of Livingston Campus in Piscataway, NJ, a wide chevron of nondescript buildings serve as the hub for the Rutgers University-New Brunswick operations and maintenance facilities. But these structures belie a secret: They mark the original depot for Camp Kilmer, a vast military facility and gateway through which 3 million troops, prisoners of war and Hungarian refugees passed during WWII and the Korean conflict, from June 1941 thru July 1953.
Inspired by the concept of “palimpsest” - the physical evidence of historic reuse,RU graduate Kimberly Tryba has chronicled the site’s hidden history and transition by following the historical development of its natural and cultural landscape from Colonial agrarian community, to military encampment and, finally, its current and future use by Rutgers University.
