A conversation with Mary Todd Lincoln
Come and Listen to the story of Mary Todd Lincoln portrayed by Pat Jordan
About this Event
Pat Jordan’s sensitive interpretation of Mary Todd Lincoln invites new understanding of this complicated and frequently-misunderstood woman. Her portrayal reveals an intelligent, quick-witted woman who married the man of her dreams: a man she knew was destined to become President. As First Lady of the United States, Mary battled to create a White House that reflected her husband’s stature, while her home and her family life were on the dividing line of North and South. Mary was torn: she had relatives on both sides of the conflict, had lost a dear son, and was married to a man who was frequently depressed by death and destruction. She endeavored to love and support her husband (even when he withdrew from her and from the world) and to nurture her family during this time of civil war. All the while she suffered, being deemed a spy by the North and a traitor by the South.
An accomplished actor, operatic singer and historian, Pat Jordan began working with the American Historical Theatre in 1992. She has a degree in theatre from Villanova, training at Juilliard Opera Workshops, and had years of experience with the German Theatre Guild. Her roles have included Shakespearean heroines, Victorian Music Hall comediennes, and opera divas. A devoted teacher, Pat has led history camps and taught at the Institute for the Gifted and at Bryn Mawr College. She was honored in 2009 by the Darlington Arts Center for teaching as part of the award-winning Chester Youth Theatre Outreach Program. Her play, Rocks in the Sun, about everyone’s right to clean water led to a gratifying performance and workshop for young people whose caretakers died in the 9-11 tragedy.
