You are cordially invited to attend a luncheon to honor George Washington and his 288th birthday on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at  1:00 p.m. at the Cranbury Inn, 21 South Main Street, Cranbury, New Jersey (www.thecranburyinn.com; 609-655-5595). To reserve a place, please phone Mrs. Elyce M. Jennings by telephone at 732-463-0767 and, as soon as you receive this notice, please mail your check, payable to the Raritan-Millstone Heritage Alliance, for $35.00 per person (including gratitudes) to 851 River Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854-0724. Reservations are required. A delicious luncheon has been planned. The featured speaker is Mike Norris who will present a program entitled “Meet George Washington.” Through works of art often drawn from area museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Delaware Art Museum, and the New-York Historical Society, see how artists of his time portrayed Washington for posterity and how that posterity, through its own crop of artists, commemorated his deeds.

Sunday, June 9 – Somerset County Save the Date for a visit with an  18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist      Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time.  There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own.
