Union County - Union - Open House @ Caldwell Parsonage


Sundays, January 27 – Union County
   The Union Township Historical Society will host an open house from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, January 27, at the Caldwell Parsonage, 909 Caldwell Avenue, Union. Historic Christmas decorations will remain up for the first open house. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served. 

      Visitors will have the opportunity to view the latest exhibit at the museum, which was mounted in October by the Union High School History Club. It features photos and text that focus on the history of the Union schools and Union High School, in particular.

         36" x 48" reproductions of the 1860 Thomas Hughes farm map of the Township of Union will be available for purchase @ $15. For more information, please call 908-591-4377.

Sunday, June 9 – Somerset County Save the Date for a visit with an  18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist      Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time.  There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own.
