Mercer County - Hopewell - Ere the Shadows Fade: New Jersey’s Civil War Era Photographers

Ere the Shadows Fade: New Jersey’s Civil War Era Photographers presented by Gary Saretzky. 

A joint program by The Hopewell Museum and the Hopewell Valley Historical Society, it will be presented in the Hill Gallery of The Hopewell Museum. The Museum is located at 28 East Broad Street, Hopewell, NJ.

More than 3,000 professionals and serious amateurs were active in New Jersey in the 19th century, most of them in the larger towns and cities. The professionals provided their customers with images they could not make themselves before changes in technology made photography easier. These photographers had a range of life experiences similar to their portrait subjects. This slide lecture will profile selected photographers from Trenton, Lambertville, and Flemington, with samples of their work.
Gary D. Saretzky, archivist, educator, and photographer, taught photography and the history of photography at Mercer County Community College from 1977 to 2012 and has served as Archivist of Monmouth County since 1994. He also was Coordinator, Internship Programs, Rutgers-New Brunswick History Department, from 1994 to 2016. Saretzky lectures regularly on the history of photography through the Public Scholars Project of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. As a photohistorian, much of his recent research has been on 19th century New Jersey photographers, for which he has developed a database, abstracted on his website saretzky.com, about more than 3,000 active in the state.

Sunday, June 9 – Somerset County Save the Date for a visit with an  18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist      Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time.  There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own.
