    Ocean County Historical Society invites you to join members and friends on our bus trip to the new Revolutionary War Museum in Philadelphia and City Tavern, on Thursday, June 21, 2018. Bus departs promptly from 26 Hadley Avenue, Toms River at 9:00 AM and returns by 4:30 PM. The cost is $88.00 for members and $98.00 for nonmembers. Cost includes a luxury charter bus, bus driver gratuity, museum admission, and a three course lunch at City Tavern.

 Established in 1773, City Tavern, was where our Founding Fathers dined, drank, and celebrated. Your lunch will offer a choice of three different 1800s style menu items, a chicken, beef, or fish dish.

Sunday, June 9 – Somerset County Save the Date for a visit with an  18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist      Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time.  There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own.
