Waterfront Longshoremen: Original Photography exhibit by Frank Silva at the American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark
Haledon, NJ - The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark located in Haledon, New Jersey proudly opens the exhibit Waterfront Longshoremen: Original Photography by Frank Silva on Sunday, September 2nd, 2018 at 1PM.

Waterfront Longshoremen: Original Photography is an exhibit of black-and-white prints that focus on San Francisco and Oakland, California waterfront workers during the decade 1978 to 1988, a time marked by the rapid change to containerization.

Frank Silva took up photography as a high school student. After serving in the US Navy, he began working on the Oakland waterfront in 1965. He joined the Waterfront Writers and Artists, a group of International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) members in 1978 and shared his photography of the waterfront. Mr. Silva collaborated on the production of Longshoremen At Work (1994), a film documenting the history of the ILWU in the San Francisco and Oakland area from 1969 to 1994. He has exhibited his photographs of longshoremen on the waterfront and recently published a book of his photographs entitled Waterfront: Longshoremen in the Era of American Labor.

In summarizing his work, Mr. Silva writes, “My life on the waterfront has been a rich experience on many levels: a wonderful place to work, creating long-lasting relationships and unionism. These photographs reflect my personal respect and affection for the people I worked with and the waterfront as a place to earn a living.

This program is made possible in part by a grant administered by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council from funds granted by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Waterfront Longshoremen: Original Photography exhibit by Frank Silva is on view at the Museum through December 31st, 2018.
