The Legend of the Jersey Devil at Franklin Library (Somerset)

Franklin Township Public Library is pleased to host The Legend of the Jersey Devil with Professor Angus Kress Gillespie on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 7:00 pm. This program is free and open to the public.

In 1735, Mother Leeds was about to deliver her thirteenth child. Feeling tired and weary of the burden, she cursed the unborn child. According to folklore, she gave birth to the devil's child at their home in the Pine Barrens. Today, the tale of Jersey Devil is often discussed as just that - a tale. However, during the time of the fabled Jersey Devil's reign of terror, South Jersey residents were truly frightened. How the accounts were reported and the folklore that developed will be discussed during this session by Professor Angus Gillespie, Professor of American Studies and Urban Studies at Rutgers University.

Angus Kress Gillespie received his B.A. in American Studies from Yale University and his Ph.D. in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania. His introductory course in American Studies combines academic rigor with real-world curiosity.

This program is free and open to the public. Registration is requested but not required via the Library’s online events calendar at www.franklintwp.org or call (732) 873-8700 ext. 111. The Franklin Township Public Library is located at 485 DeMott Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873 in the municipal complex.
