Thursday, October 10 -- Morris County          To coincide with Fire Prevention Week, the Morris County Historical Society will officially open its new exhibit,  Up in Smoke: Northern New Jersey’s Worst Man-Made Disasters: 1910-1989 ,  at Acorn Hall, Thursday, October 10, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This photo-driven exhibit brings heroes to light, recognizes the sacrifices of those lost, and illustrates the varied events that brought communities together, tightened safety regulations, and changed legislation nationally.              Up in Smoke  covers twelve 20 th -century disasters , five from Morris and seven from its contiguous counties that, due to their scale, severity, loss of life, or ability to cause major changes in workplace safety or fire science, stand as benchmarks with ominous connotations. What a great way to celebrate Earth Day! Nature related poems, by various famous poets, will be posted around the trees outside the Park Interpretive Center. Preservation in Practice: A Primer for Historic Preservation Commissions and Planners This one-day workshop is open to all preservationists, but it is specifically geared toward those serving on a local commission. This program is designed to benefit both new and experienced commission members and will also be relevant for planning and zoning board members and elected officials. The course provides an in-depth examination of current topics and issues relevant to integrating preservation into community planning and zoning. Focus will be on legal parameters for implementing a commission, conducting an effective public meeting, and understanding and implementing tools to foster good preservation at the local level. Register now for Hudson River bus tour      Everything is set for our bus trip along the Hudson River,  Saturday and Sunday, April 25th & 26th.  We'll be travelling up the west side of the Hudson River, with stops at  several Revolutionary War sites  with a few special guides and programs, then having dinner and staying overnight in West Coxsackie, NY. Although it means a little more of the bus ride after our last stop, it saves us from a really early start on Sunday to make our first Sunday site. On Sunday, we'll come back south along the east side of the Hudson, with stops at  Olana and Clermont Mansion , both New York State Historic Sites. For the complete itinerary as well as a description of the places we'll be visiting,  click here .      The cost is $245 per person and includes everything but dinner on our way home. To view the registration form, which gives you more infor...

FYI, our colleagues at the Newark Public Library have organized two online programs related to Newark history and started a COVID-19 archive: -- Thursday, April 23 at 1 pm :  Newark genealogy talk via Zoom with professional genealogists Melissa Johnson and Mark A.J. Szep discussing their extensive experience researching Newark family history.  They will talk about repositories, sources, and strategies for researching Newark family history at a time when all repositories are closed. Details for how to join will be posted on NPL's website before the event. - -COVID-19 archive . The Library is asking those who live, work, or go to school in Newark to contribute written and/or visual reminiscences to their COVID-19 Archive. Wednesday, April 22 – Essex County     Please join the Cedar Grove Historical Society on March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar Grove Library, 1 Municipal Court, when Jean Jaeger, Cedar Grove Township Historian, will present a program entitled  “Let’s Stroll Down Pompton Avenue.”        She will take you back to a time when what is now known as Pompton Avenue was a narrow dirt road lined with houses up to the present day when the road is a state highway.  During the PowerPoint presentation, we will look at the changes that have taken place over the years and share what we remember from the past. There will be a short business meeting before the presentation.
