Middlesex County - Monroe Twp - A Short History of German-Jewish Life in the United States

Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 17 – Middlesex County

The American Jewish Experience Lecture Series, presented by the Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey, continues for its 22nd consecutive year with a presentation by Dr. Nathan M. Reiss, entitled: A Short History of German-Jewish Life in the United States.

Contrary to general belief, German Jews already composed a large fraction of the Jews who lived in the American colonies before the Revolutionary War, and they made many unexpected and unheralded contributions to American Jewish life. This talk examines the history of German-Jewish life in the U.S. and discusses the many influences and contributions that this group made.

Nathan Reiss, a resident of Highland Park, has been engaged in the study of genealogy for much of his life, and to date has found over 15,000 relatives.  In 1980, he authored a book on his own family history, and in 2015 he updated it with a new 1,100-page edition. Dr. Reiss received a Ph.D. in Meteorology in 1973. From 1972 until his retirement in 1997, he was a professor in the Departments of Meteorology and Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University. From 1996-2001 he served as President of Congregation Etz Ahaim, a Sephardic congregation in Highland Park. From 2003 until the present he has served as President of the Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey.

The lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 9th, at 10:00 a.m. at Jewish Family Services, 52 Concordia Shopping Center, Monroe Township. The lecture will be repeated on Wednesday, APRIL17th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Highland Park Conservative Temple, 201 South 3rd Avenue, Highland Park.  Both lectures are open to the public. A donation of $2.00 is requested at the door. For more information send email to INFO.JHSCJ@gmail.com or call the JHSCJ office at 732-249-4894.
