Morris County - Mendham - Reclaiming Our Voice: New Jersey’s Central Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage
Tuesday, May 28 – Morris County
The Mendham Borough Historical Society meeting takes place on Tuesday, May 28, at 1:30 PM in the Garabrant Center, 4 Wilson Street, Borough. Following a brief business agenda, Carol Simon Levin presents the program, Reclaiming Our Voice: New Jersey’s Central Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage. In our early years, NJ was the only state where women had the right to vote, lost it in 1807, won it back five generations later, the state’s role in the struggle largely overlooked. Many of the women involved in the national movement were from NJ – Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Tenafly, founder and author with Susan B. Anthony of Woman Suffrage movements and publications; Lucy Stone, S. Orange, “No taxation without representation”; Portia Gage and over 100 women from Vineland who brought their own ballot boxes to the polls to cast presidential votes.
Levin presents not only their tenacity, endurance, stories but also those of many other women with NJ ties who energized the movement for a federal amendment, as well as that of the only pioneer suffragist who lived long enough to cast her vote! With voting and ballot rights again in the news, MBHS presents another timely topic! Carol Simon Levin, retired librarian, author, storyteller, based in Bedminster, is known for her programs and personal style of presentation tailored to particular groups at many venues and societies.
Public invited; program/parking free. Note time change: 1:30 PM.
