Old-Fashioned Holiday Weekends at the Foster Armstrong House.
 Holiday themes for this year include, “A Military Holiday”, “Walt Disney”, “Christmas Stockings Over the Years” and of course, our traditional operating Model Train Display!

The Foster-Armstrong House, circa 1790, a two-story Dutch colonial, with a circa 1820 kitchen addition is located on SC521/ 320 River Road, Montague, NJ, about 1 mile north of the Milford/Montague Bridge. It is listed on the State Historic Register of NJ and is a National Historic Register Site. The Nelden-Roberts Stonehouse, circa 1820, a two-story original schoolhouse, is located at 501 Route 206 North, Montague, NJ about 1 mile south of the Milford/Montague Bridge. It is listed on the State Historic Register on New Jersey.
Both museums are located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The historical society has a partnership with the National Park Service to keep both houses open to the public as museums. Both sites are available for small group tours. Our research library is opened, by appointment only, for genealogy and historical research. Call 973-293-3949 to schedule. Sunday, June 9 – Somerset County Save the Date for a visit with an  18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist      Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time.  There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own.
